I just looked at the price on the back of a book I’ve had for a bit over a decade and it was four. fucking. dollars. Just four with no taxes. No extra 97cents or something before taxes. Just a round number that you would add taxes to.

I googled the price of a new edition and it was almost thirteen! Not an even thirteen, it was like 12.96 or something. Close enough that it’s basically thirteen but if you’re adding multiple items together to try and get the price on a purchase with more items it would add more confusion.

#emma posts #it was also a bit difficult to find a new copy on my phone #the edition I have was selling for wildly varying prices as a vintage book now #but that’s just a kids chapter book from a fairly large publisher #I know inflation happens and stuff but holy shit #buying things at the book fair makes so much more sense now #I bought that for 4$ plus taxes at the schoolastic book fair #it was maybe 12 years ago?#I could look at the publishing date for a better idea #the series had just switched publishers and the first few were being re-released at the time #before the new publisher and the author finished the series #four dollars though #I had to check the book because I know the current price of many paperbacks and I knew that series was still in print #but what lead to this was the price tag falling off an old brush I found from like. 2009 or 2010 #and the tag on this very large brush was seven dollars #which seemed cheap so I looked at current brush prices online but since the exact same brush isn’t being sold and brush prices vary more #it was a bit harder for me to get an idea of it. books though. books I know #I’ve even bought stuff from that publisher recently (they have a lot of novel and comic translations)#but it also struck me how the old price tag was an even four and an even seven dollars but all new ones had 97 or 98 cents #that ten dollars from helping out grandma wouldn’t have even gotten me one book with modern prices #but back then I could get TWO #even just seven could have gotten me a book and some fun school supplies back then #to have that experience now you would need to give your kid a 20$#I understand inflation okay? I am just taken off guard rn and having realizations #I’m going to add to this post again. when I say wildly varied vintage prices I mean WILDLY varied #one dude was trying to sell it on Amazon for 55$ but on eBay it was 4 to 5$#I bought the next three books in the series from that same print. signed. for 13$ together #I had older editions of those and wanted a full series of just the ones that were being re-released during my reading time

god i fucking hate job hunting. i dont wanna "empower customers and drive shareholder value by delivering products at scale". i dont wanna "join a high-performing team and collaborate with cross-functional partners to drive impactful solutions". i dont wanna "help establish a leading brand and accelerate growth in an undisrupted industry". can i just work on a thing that people like or find useful. is that too much to ask

#rambles #its a real grim time to be an avowed genAI hater in the tech industry who doesnt want to help cause outright harm #most job postings matching my skillset are either for plainly evil companies that are actively ruining society and the earth itself #(amazon or meta/facebook or google or what have you)#or doing stupid ai bullshit that *also* helps ruin society and the earth itself #or it's web3/crypto. which obviously also sucks for the same reasons. though sometimes its a fun combination of those 3 #i got like halfway through the interview process with a company that was none of those things that i thought would be a really good fit #but i got the “we're not moving forward” email today- given the job posting is no longer up im hoping they just already found someone #as opposed to them rejecting me outright. but i have no way of knowing.#man i just. dont know what to do. the tech industry sucks more with each passing day but its the only thing i have experience in/skills for #if i were to quit & go back to school for something else that would be a huge gamble that would leave me broke #and i probably wouldnt have better job prospects by the end of it- just more palatable ones #like my dream job would be in localization but 1. my japanese isnt good enough so i'd have to spend probably multiple years developing it #and 2. from what i understand its a very competitive & unstable job market with mostly contract/temp work #every day the temptation to just get up and walk in the woods and spend the rest of my days as a hermit grows stronger

just realised that the first media we consumed that made us REALLY sympathetic for the monster was that fucking point and click Mystery Case Files Ravenhearst game. bc that entire game i was legitimately fucking TERRIFIED of the ghost lady in that game but the second i found out her husband was abusive i doubled down on trying to help her escape. and the ending of that game Did make me cry out of fear but hey at least i did in fact help her escape

#i think that was the first game we ever like. completed. as well #NO it was hidden expedition amazon bc that one was less scary so it was easier to beat LMAO #we had both of those games on a single disc as a kid #one o those like. buy 2 for cheap game discs at like. best buy. i love those cheap bargain bin point and click games #hidden object games were my entire thing from the age of like. 8 to 12 #we also had like. three ispy game discs one of which had FOUR separate worlds to go to #which upon my recent googling was like. multiple ispy games packaged into one which i cannot find any record of??#i know for a fact it had a space section the fantasy one and the school days one #and then we had treasure hunt and spooky mansion as separate discs #I FUCKING MISS SPOOKY MANSION i have a download of it but i CAN'T PLAY IT bc it was made for computers older than windows 7 #it fucks up the aspect ratio of the screen and the mouse like. shows the cursor being about an inch to the left of where it Actually Is #its weird #anyway complete non sequitur here but I GOT THE STUPID ASS MULTIPLAYER ITEMS IN TERRARIA #i forgot i could just. make a multiplayer world. and not invite anyone to it. and get the items that way #so this can still be a purely singleplayer challenge i just have to click on a different menu to get these items #NOW I JUST HAVE TO FUCKING PAINTING HUNT. Ah... lovely. Time to panic over not being allowed to bring my rollator this semester since my parents and I are going down together and I can't hide it from them successfully and we don't have enough tape for me to even lie about what's in the box. So I guess it's just my cane this semester or I wait until my next paycheck and have to buy another rollator

(which is so stupid!! That is so stupid because I have one and it works great but also I'm not allowed to bring it but a relatively cheap rollator is a lot cheaper than hospital bills.)
